Bathroom Basin and Bath Upgrade in London

This bathroom did not need to be stripped back completely. The bath, wall tiles and main layout could remain, but the old pedestal basin offered no storage and the existing bath fittings limited how the space could be used.

Our London Plumbing team focused the work where it would make the greatest practical difference. We removed the pedestal basin, altered the water and waste connections, fitted a compact vanity basin and upgraded the bath with a mixer tap, shower attachment and riser rail. By retaining the usable parts of the room, we delivered a meaningful bathroom improvement without turning it into a full refurbishment.

Planning the Upgrade Around a Narrow Bathroom

The room had a typical compact arrangement, with the bath along one wall and the basin, toilet and radiator positioned closely together at the far end. Any replacement fitting had to work within those fixed dimensions.

The old pedestal basin occupied valuable floor space but provided no enclosed storage. The exposed pipework beneath it also made the area feel unfinished. A vanity basin offered a better use of the same position, but its cabinet meant the existing connections could not simply be reused without alteration.

This type of restricted bathroom layout is common in London properties. Changing one fixture often means working carefully around the bath, radiator, toilet, window and existing tiles rather than moving everything else to create more room.

Removing the Basin Without Disturbing the Existing Finish

We began by disconnecting and removing the original pedestal basin. The nearby wall tiles were staying in place, so we worked carefully around the fixing points and existing supply pipes.

Once the basin was removed, the hot and cold feeds and waste connection were fully visible. Their original positions suited an open pedestal rather than an enclosed cabinet. Leaving them unchanged would have prevented the new vanity unit from sitting properly against the wall.

We cleared the area and measured the new basin against the available width between the radiator and toilet. This allowed us to determine exactly where the revised connections needed to finish.

Reworking the Water and Waste Connections

New copper pipework was installed to bring the hot and cold supplies into positions suited to the vanity basin. The waste pipe was also adapted so that it could connect cleanly within the unit.

We kept the pipe routes compact and direct, paying close attention to the restricted working area beside the bath. The revised arrangement needed to fit inside the cabinet without obstructing its placement or taking up unnecessary internal storage space.

Before fitting the unit permanently, we checked the new connections and confirmed that the basin could sit level against the tiled wall. Completing this preparation first avoided forcing the cabinet around poorly positioned pipes.

Fitting the Vanity Basin into the Existing Layout

The new white vanity unit was positioned in the same general location as the pedestal basin. Its rectangular basin and simple cabinet give the bathroom a cleaner appearance while adding enclosed storage below.

We secured the unit, connected the single-lever mixer tap and joined the waste to the prepared outlet. The finished basin fits neatly beneath the window and leaves practical clearance beside the toilet and radiator.

This was a relatively small change in terms of floor area, but it made the end of the bathroom feel more organised. The plumbing is now contained within the cabinet rather than remaining exposed beneath a pedestal.

Upgrading the Existing Bath Fittings

The bath itself remained in place, but its fittings were upgraded. We installed a modern bath mixer tap with a flexible shower hose and handheld shower head.

A vertical riser rail was fitted above the bath so that the shower head could be held and adjusted to a comfortable height. This gave the existing bath a more versatile everyday function without requiring a new bath or a major alteration to the tiled walls.

The mixer, hose and rail were aligned carefully within the available space, keeping the controls accessible from inside and outside the bath.

A Better Bathroom Without a Full Strip-Out

The completed upgrade provides enclosed storage beneath the basin and a more practical shower arrangement above the bath. The revised water and waste connections sit neatly within the vanity unit, while the new mixer tap and adjustable shower attachment improve the existing bath. These changes made the bathroom more useful while allowing the serviceable layout and finishes to remain.

Excellent service from start to finish! The plumber was professional, reliable, friendly, and very knowledgeable. He arrived on time, quickly identified the problem, and fixed it efficiently. Everything was explained clearly, and the price was fair and reasonable. I really appreciated his attention to detail and the fact that he left everything clean and tidy afterwards. It’s not easy to find a trustworthy plumber in London, so I’m very happy to have found someone I can rely on. Highly recommended! I would definitely use his services again.
